I did the manual install, zend version, and then pulled up the site in the browser to start install step 2 but all I have is a blank screen. I uploaded all files in binary, changed the permissions on the snippet-db folder, and renamed db.inc.php and changed permissions. What now?

Hmm.. blank screen could indicate a lot of things.
My advice is to try the autoinstaller, and just choose the "zend" version. That way, it'll get everything it needs.
Failing that.. let me know the URL of the installation and I'll try to take a look. You can send it to me at "henri @ www.snippetmaster.com". Please include a link to this thread so I know what is the problem.

OK, I'll try that. I also put in a request for a new license key, as the version I was using is 1.2.5

Autoinstaller worked. Seems the version of Zend was too old, so it installed the ioncube instead. Thanks!
When do I receive the new license key?
