Test the new Auto-Uploader!

Dear Beta Tester,

In response to the difficulty of installation for the new version of SnippetMaster (ie: problems with corrupted files after upload, long upload times, not sure if you should use ioncube or zend, ascii instead of binary, etc.), I have created the AUTO-UPLOADER utility.

This new AUTO-UPLOADER utility makes installation or upgrades of SnippetMaster literally a 1 minute task!

Basically, you just enter your FTP info, browse to your SnippetMaster program folder, and hit the Install Now! button. The program does all kinds of checking to figure out what encoder type to use (you can over-ride the "auto" setting if you already know you want zend or ioncube), downloads the most recent .zip file, unzips it, and then ftp's it all into your selected program folder. You can use it for new a new install or upgrading an existing install. (See important note below if upgrading.)

*** IMPORTANT NOTE: ***

If you are using a version of SnippetMaster that is older then 2.0.18, then you MUST delete your db.inc.php file before running the Auto-Uploader. Any Snippetmaster version older then 2.0.18 has an incompatible database structure and will cause problems after you upgrade to the newest version (v2.0.20).

HOW TO USE THE AUTO-UPLOADER TO INSTALL OR UPGRADE SNIPPETMASTER

[1] If you are upgrading from a version of Snippetmaster older then 2.0.18, you MUST delete your db.inc.php file before running the Auto-Uploader. (This will trigger the Installation Wizard after the Auto-Uploader is finished.) Alternatively, you can simply create a new test folder to try it out. :)

"Normal" User Privileges - Your opinion is needed!

Hello,

I have had several requests to change the "snippet editing privileges" for the Normal/Regular user type. I would like to know your opinion on:

[1] What editing privileges this user type should have?
[2] What "name" should this user type have? Normal or Regular?

Currently, we have four user types:

ADMIN USERS
- Have access to all Admin Areas of the program.
- Can edit entire files and all snippets.
SUPER USERS
- Able to edit entire files and all snippets.
POWER USERS
- Able to edit all snippets.
REGULAR/NORMAL USERS
- Able to edit only snippets that do not have a Users
access control list or if their username is specifically
added to the snippet's access control list.
(ie: users="" OR users="user1")

Please tell me if you would like the REGULAR/NORMAL USER access to be changed to the following:

REGULAR/NORMAL USERS
- Able to edit only snippets that specifically list the
user's username in the access list. (ie: users="user1")
- ie: If the snippet does not include a "users" list of
users then they would NOT have access to edit the snippet.

Final beta version released (v2.0.17)

Any images or links that are inserted by the file browser (ie: when you navigate through folders to insert/modify a link or image) will now be RELATIVE instead of absolute. This is a feature that has been requested by many people. New beta release (v2.0.13) - major fix!

Please upgrade to the newest beta release ASAP. (Version 2.0.13)

This new release fixes a critical problem that was stopping the WYSIWYG editor from loading when trying to edit a file NOT in the program installation folder.

MAJOR NEW FEATURE

The wysiwyg editor will now automatically find and make available all CSS styles that are EMBEDDED (defined with a "style" tag) in the page being edited. So the editor should now work with both LINKED and EMBEDDED CSS styles! Please be sure to test this new capability as thoroughly as possible. Let me know asap if you find any problems.

New SnippetMaster BETA release (v2.0.12)

Dear Beta Tester,

Thank you very very much for your patience with the development of SnippetMaster v2. I am once again back in the chair, and will now hopefully be able to deliver new features and improvements at a faster rate.

Please log into your Client Area to download the latest release (v2.0.12):

This new release adds three major enhancements:

- Addition of Editor Groups (Make your own toolbar, editor options, etc.)
- Partial CSS support (Please see the "known issues" section below)
- Ability to edit "whole file" with the WYSIWYG editor. (Experimental)

HOW TO UPGRADE FROM AN OLD VERSION
--------------------
There is no upgrade process to go from an older 2.x version to the new release. You'll need to completely start over because a lot of things in the database have been changed, and I just didn't have time to figure out how to do an upgrade script to save any old settings. Sorry! (Once the software is in "production", all upgrades will be handled with an upgrade script. For now, you must delete everything and start over again.)

TO INSTALL:

1) Backup your old /snippetmaster folder. (Just in case.)
2) Delete your old /snippetmaster folder.
3) Follow normal install instructions in the /snippetmaster/readme.html file.

KNOWN ISSUES
--------------------

CSS & StyleSheets

SnippetMaster should now automatically find and use any linked stylesheets. For example:

Any styles defined in the "style.css" file will automatically be used by the editor and available for selection when editing. (ie: If you have defined a "body" style, then this will be used by the editor to set things like background color, etc...)

However, the program will not (yet) recognize any embedded styles in the HTML file. Adding this capability is a high priority and is something I will try to fix asap. For now, only linked stylesheets will be recognized by the editor. Sorry! (I have been working on this problem for a few weeks now, and due to popular demand I am releasing it so you can test how things are going so far.

BETA testing of the new SnippetMaster version is going well. There are only a few remaining bugs left, and I am hoping to have a final BETA version available within a week. If you haven't already installed the latest version (v2.0.5), please be sure to visit the Client Area and get the latest download. Thanks again for your help!

** I NEED MORE HELP! **

After spending many hours trying to understand CSS, I realized that I am a good programmer but a lousy web designer. Thus, I am now looking for a CSS expert to "fix" the new SnippetMaster template pages.

The idea is that anyone who wants to change the "look" of SnippetMaster should be able to open a single CSS stylesheet and be able to modify the colors of all text, tables, links, etc of the program. (At this time, I'm not interested in changing to a tableless layout.) I want to have the ability to easily change the "look" of the templates by modifying a single CSS stylesheet.

The work will involve "removing" html code (fonts, table bg colors, etc.) and then replacing them with CSS styles.

If you are interested in this work, please reply to this email with the following information:

1) A brief overview of your experience with CSS, html, and web design.
2) How much you will charge. (Or perhaps you're willing to work in exchange for SnippetMaster licenses?)

(My preference is to "hire" someone who is willing to work in exchange for SnippetMaster licenses, but if necessary I am willing to pay you cash via PayPal.)

After many months, hurdles and delays.. I'm pleased to finally annouce the first BETA release of SnippetMaster version 2 is ready for you to test.

This is a BETA release, and is expected to have a few bugs and should NOT be used in a live production environment. A dedicated area on the SnippetMaster forums has been created (*) where you can read more about the beta testing process, find out how to download the software, report bugs, and make suggestions/comments.

(*) NOTE: Before you can access the BETA area of the forums, you will need to register for a forum account and reply to this email with your forum username. I'll then give you access to the BETA area of the forum where you can find all the beta testing information. If you already have an existing forum account, just reply to this email and let me know what is your existing username.
