[-] file permission
« on: November 19, 2008, 12:26:20 PM »

Hi,

is there a way to allow a separate user access to certain files?

In other words we have a web site.  That website is edited by a admin.  in their office there is a department that just needs to update certain files and she is scared she might edit the wrong ones?

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

This is exactly the purpose behind having different  "users" in Snippetmaster.

More information is here:

Cheers!

ok.  I am a little confused.

I need to be able to allow a person to edit "whole files" but only certain files.

is that possible?

Thanks.

Hello,

Yes, but the only way to do this would be to put your files into different folders and then create a different "List Group" for each user.

For example, let's say that User1 should only be able to edit file1.html.

So you would:

- Put "file1.html" into a folder called "user1folder".
- Create a List Group in Snippetmaster that "includes" only the "user1folder".
- Specify the starting Folder as "path/to/user1folder".

So now when user1 logs into Snippetmaster, they will only see files in user1folder.

I hope that makes sense?

so the only other way is to just give them snippets to edit and not whole files?

thanks.

Hello,

Yes, that would be the only other way.  The problem is that when editing a whole file, there is no way to specify the user, because there is nowhere to locate that information.  (ie: When editing just a snippet.. the user access list is actually located inside the Snippet Tag.  When editing a whole file, there is no snippet tag or anywhere to make a list of what users are allowed to access the file being edited.)

The only way to do this would be to create an "external" list of files and what users can access them.  This is already added to the "to do" list, so it will be done eventually.. but for now... the only way to do it is to use List Groups to restrict the users into certain folders.

one more.

the reason I wanted them to be able to edit whole files is so when they are editing a page they do not mess up the theme by putting too much content into the table.

so is there a way to only allow a certain width of text that automatically wraps?

sorry for all the qqestions.

thanks.

Hello,

If they are allowed to edit the whole file, then there is no restriction to what they can modify.

The only way to specify a hard margin would be to use a CSS attribute to do that for the table cell or div.
