[-] Email Addresses
« on: December 04, 2005, 02:37:55 PM »

Beta Version
Hi, I have some 40 members of my organization to whom I would like to give very limited and specialist page editing facilities. I set up a new account for them which went fine until the admin form insisted on an email address. I had put in mine as a sort of 'collective' address but I then got the error report that the address was already in use by another member (presumably me)!
I am quite happy to receive the error reports from my members on my own email address. I have got around the problem for the moment by using another dormant email account of mine, but;
Could I please use the webmaster's (administrator's) email for less privileged member accounts? Or would that cause a different set of problems?

Hello,

The problem is that the email address for the user is used by the "lost password" utility.  ie: If the user can't remember their password, then they can enter their username and the password will be emailed to whatever email address is specified for their user.

If you used the same email address for every user, then the lost password utility would be somewhat pointless since they wouldn't be able to retrieve their password.

Let me know if that doesn't make sense, and I'll rethink this.

I think most systems are similar, in that they don't usually allow you to specify the same email address for multiple users.. (ie: If you try to sign up for these forums with a different username, but same email address, I don't think it will let you... not 100% positive on that, though.)

 Smile

Thanks, I see what you mean and I expected there to be problems popping up somewhere else!
For our site, the member (as opposed to the general publuc) already needs a Uname/Password to get into the 'private' members area within the site and, if they don't know the password, e.g new members, they ask me. So I planned to use exactly the same log in details for Snippetmaster so they won't forget.
One could envisage an admin. function when setting up a new account which enabled/disabled the 'forgotten password' routine. Sounds inelegant. Or you could just delete the checking of the new member's email against the list. If all lowly privileged new accounts were then set with the webmaster's email, he then would get all the junk from errors and forgotten passwords. If the junk emails actually came in to the webmaster with username, he might be able to handle them personally, outside of Snippetmaster. I have the email addresses of all our members.
But maybe you are using the email address elsewhere for indexing stuff and/or unique identification?
I'll keep the problem in mind and call you if any other thoughts come up.

I'm not using the email address anywhere else at the moment.  What I'm going to do is add an option to the general program settings area... which allows you to enable/disable the "require unique email address" option.

This way, you can disable this requirement if needed.

 Very Happy

I should have this included in the next update, probably in a few days.

Cheers!

This feature has been added to version 2.0.8.  (Soon to be released into the client area.)
