If anyone can figure out how to get the editor to recognize and support CSS during editing.. I would be happy indeed.

I'm not sure what you are asking - in reality, you should be able to specify class attibutes to any area that is editable.  You would, of course, need to go into html editing mode to specify the specific class attribute, but anyone who has any amount of html editing experience should be able to do this quite easily.
